Dear friends,

I have chosen one of the 7 Care projects in 2009.

Poverty has a lot of faces. Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world.

Half of all the adults in the world can't read or write. Also the sanitary situation is shocking: About 20 per cent of the whole population are malnourished. Unfortunately it's especially threatening the lives of the smallest in the community: Every seventh child does not survive their own fith birthday.

And every second child is malnourished. Infrastructure is insufficiant: Over 18 million of the 27 million people living in Nepal have to live without electricity. Only every third has acces to sanitary facilities.To break the circle of poverty, the people in Chitwan need a source of income. That's why CARE and the local partner Shanti Griha offer various classes, in which they convey knowledge of new agricultural methods, cattle and bee breed, but also accounting etc. In order to better the sanitary situation permanently, there are special trainings about hygiene and healthy nutrition. Those classes are fitted for the individual villages and the villager's interests. Additionally, CARE supports schools in the villages and stives for a qualified education. Help that sinks in.

Especially important is also the access to drinkable water, because having water means to be able to live. So far the villagers had to travel a long, burdensome path to their nearest fount. Also water's quality was very bad. That's why the whole community helped to build water pipes. Now there is clean water in front of everyone's door.CARE and Shanti Griha also teach them about the maintenance and care for these facilities, so that they can be maintained by the respective village committee.

The fields' cultivation was very difficult, too, since the rain was overflowing the land and it was impossible to accomplish a cultivation throughout the year during a drought. Thanks to the new build ditches, the fields can be used optimally. The nutrition within the villages has improved a lot. The people can even sell the surplus crops at their local markets.

Training to lay out a garden per person 5 Euros.
Literacy classes for adults 93 Euros.
Installation of a watering system 6.575 Euros.

About Nepal

Nepal is less than half as big as Germany and on the average the highest located country of the world. It is located between both the countries with the highest population, India and autonomic region Tibet and the People's Republic of China.
In the northern and eastern part of Nepal ranges the Himalaya mountains with the highest mountain, Mount Everest.

In the south, however, the land falls away sharply. In these lowlands in the south-east, the region Chitwan is located. Here are many hardly approachable villages, which are only accessible over narrow paths and on food. Without electricity, drinkable water and inadequate nutrition, those people live way below the minimum subsistence level.

CARE breaks the circle of poverty. With the local partner agency Shanti Griha, CARE supports the people in Chitwan and helps them to build up an ensured existence beyond the poverty level and for a determined future.

About CARE

CARE is a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty. We place special focus on working alongside poor women because, equipped with the proper resources, women have the power to help whole families and entire communities escape poverty. Women are at the heart of CARE's community-based efforts to improve basic education, prevent the spread of HIV, increase access to clean water and sanitation, expand economic opportunity and protect natural resources. CARE also delivers emergency aid to survivors of war and natural disasters, and helps people rebuild their lives.

CARE's Work

CARE doesn't just feed the hungry – we also tackle underlying causes of poverty so that people can become self-sufficient. Each year, our programs improve the lives of millions people in over 60 countries. The scope of CARE's mission has evolved and expanded considerably since its formation in 1945 to send CARE Packages to survivors of WWII in Europe and Asia. Today, CARE works alongside poor communities to help create lasting solutions to their most threatening problems.

Care's Mission is to serve individuals and families in the poorest communities in the world. Drawing strength from our global diversity, resources and experience, we promote innovative solutions and are advocates for global responsibility. We facilitate lasting change by:

* · Strengthening capacity for self-help
* · Providing economic opportunity
* · Delivering relief in emergencies
* · Influencing policy decisions at all levels
* · Addressing discrimination in all its forms

Guided by the aspirations of local communities, we pursue our mission with both excellence and compassion because the people whom we serve deserve nothing less.
